What happens to an egg that doesn't get fertilized?

Menstruation occurs when the female reproductive unit i.e egg isn't fertilised. Every month uterus prepares itself to receive a fertilised egg. To nourish the embryo its lining becomes thick and spongy cushion like. In case the egg is not fertilised,the lining breaks and discharges out the egg through vagina in the form of blood.
