What happens to cell content when multiple cells are merged to form a single cell

When we merge multiple cells horizontally or vertically in Excel, they form a large cell which is spread along the number of rows and columns.


As far as the content in the cells is concern, the only the upper most content remains if cells are merged vertically and the left most content remains if they are merged horizontally.
