When a body is kept at a height then it possesses potential energy and its kinetic energy is 0.
As it is made to fall freely from the height it starts gaining kinetic energy and the the level of potential energy decreases or the potential energy stars converting into kinetic energy.
When the body finally falls on the ground then it's potential energy becomes 0 and kinetic energy is maximum.
In this whole process , the energy remains conserved.
