What happens to plants during etiolation?

Etiolation, or weakening, of a plant occurs when its stems grow longer and more rapidly than normally because of a lack of sunlight. Spindly plants in search of light lose strength, have long internodes and few leaves. Nodes are the areas of the stem where leaves are located; internodes are the stem areas between nodes. Plants developing early in the season experience the greatest internode growth, while growth decreases at the end of the growing season

The pale color is caused from a lack of chlorophyll – the pigment in leaves that makes them green. Internodes (the length between growing points on a stem) are longer and leaves are sparse. The plant stretches during etiolation because it increases the likelihood of it finding light.
