What happens to potential energy of the atoms of solid when it is compressed?

In compressing or stretching a body, we are actually storing energy in it. That energy will be used to bring the body to it's natural state. You can observe the same in a spring, which stores energy whenever it is stretched or compressed.

So, the potential energy increases in both the cases.
