The rate of breathing increases during vigorous exercise. This is because the body needs more energy which can be released only if greater amounts of oxygen reach the cells. For this purpose, the rate of breathing increases.( This will increase the supply of oxygen to the cells).

During vigrous activities like running our body consumes a large amount of energy.
We get this energy due to oxygen by the process of cellular respiration
However while running the amount of oxygen our body consumes is more that what it gains through respiration
Therefore due to depleation of oxygen reserves our body performs anaerobic respiration
However, due to this type of respiration alcohol and other organic acids are formed due to which we feel tired
To stop this type of respiration our body breathes heavily due to which more oxygen is taken into the body and hence anaerobic respiration can br stopped
(anaerobic cellular respiration = oxidation of foodsuff for production of energy in absence of oxygen)
