A cotyledon is a significant part of the embryo within the seed of a plant. Upon germination, the cotyledonusually becomes the embryonic first leaves of a seedling. The number ofcotyledons present is one characteristic used by botanists to classify the flowering plants (angiosperms).

A monocot seed consists of embryo, one cotyledon and the endosperm. During the process of germination the embryo gets eaten up then endosperm and also the cotyledons are also used as the food. The embryo sends a primary root which then passes out through the seed coat down ward into the soil. It also pushes the primary leaves up through this coating; cotyledons are not seen above the ground in monocots.
