Fertilization occurs when one of the sperm cells fuses with the egg inside of an ovule. After fertilization occurs, each ovuledevelops into a seed. Each seed contains a tiny, undeveloped plant called an embryo. Theovary surrounding the ovules develops into a fruit that contains one or more seeds.

A fertilized egg is called a zygote until it divides into 16 cells, forming a ball-shaped structure called a morula. ... In humans, it takes about four days for a zygote to become a morula and another three days until the embryo attaches itself to the mother's uterine wall.p
