When there is a disaster or any calamity the production of food grains decreases in the affected area. This in turn creates a shortage of food in the affected area. The prices of goods go up due to the shortage of food which in turn affects the purchasing power of the people. When there is any calamity in a widespread area or is for a very long period of time, it may cause a situation of starvation. A massive starvation might take a turn of famine.
A famine is characterised by widespread deaths due to starvation and epidemics caused by forced use of contaminated water or decaying food and loss of body resistance due to weakening from starvation.
