what happens to the glass when a bullet from a gun is fired towards the window pane

Most bullets are lead, and lead is soft and deform, and can actually melt due to heat generated when it impacts a hard surface heavily enough. So if you can swing a heavy enough hammer at a good enough speed and have it hit a small enough area, the glass can break.
