The following changes happen to the lining of the uterus:

(i)  Just before the egg is released, the endometrium lining is thickest and fully developed.

  • The endometrial lining is richly supplied with blood vessels and is ready for the possible implantation of the embryo.
  • This development is due to high levels of estrogen and progesterone (from the corpus luteum).

(ii) If no fertilization occurs, the inner lining of the uterus sheds and comes out of the body.

  • The level of progesterone decreases, and the endometrial lining starts shedding.
  • The blood and mucus come out of the female body through the vagina.
  • This is called the menstrual or the bleeding phase.
