When molecules are heated (absorb energy) they move faster – some, or all of the heat energy is converted to kinetic energy. So, when a gas is heated, the effect is to make the molecules move faster.

The actual average speed of the particles depends on their mass as well as the temperature – heavier particles move more slowly than lighter ones at the same temperature. With an increase in temperature, the particles move faster as they gain kinetic energy, resulting in increased collision rates and an increased rate of diffusion.
