Ammonium Acetate CH3 COO NH4 is a salt formed by weak acid and weak base. In its water solution the pH is nearly 7, that means it is nearly neutral.
When a few drops of an acid (say HCl) are added into it, then resulting solution will have slightly acidic properties. pH will decrease below 7. A small amount of Acetic acid is formed which is a weak acid.
On the other hand if a small amount of acid is added to a mixture of Ammonium acetate and acetic acid, then the pH increases a little, as the H+ ions are absorbed by the acetate (CH3 COO-) ions.
