When we stretch or compress a spring , we are working against the restoring force of spring.
our muscular energy is stored inside the spring as Elastic potential energy.
"The energy possessed by the body by virtue of its change in its shape or size is called as Elastic potential energy."
Which when released has a lot of power to some work.
The more we compress or stretch , the more work is done by us and more energy is stored.
IT can be verified by the following equation
U=1/2kx²
where x is displacement... Greater x greater will be the energy stored.

The potential energy of a spring is given by the formula = 1/2 k(spring constant ) * x ( distance till which the spring is stretched ) to the power 2 . when a spring is stretched then it gains some potential energy which is released once the spring is released after being stretched . the force applied on the spring is restoring force and thus the potential energy of a spring is used when it's stretched and released
