When the speed of light passes from a denser medium to a rarer medium, it slightly bends towards the normal.

When the speed of light passes from a rarer medium to a denser medium, it tends to bend away from the normal.

If we take an example of air and glass, then the glass is the denser medium and air is the rarer medium. The phenomenon happens because light travels faster in denser mediums then the rarer mediums.
