When vegetable oil is heated with sodium hydroxide solution a white suspension is formed. The white suspension formed is made up of soap and glycerol. This process in which the soap is formed by heating vegetable oil and sodium hydroxide solution is known as saponification. This reaction is exothermic in nature because heat is liberated during the reaction.
