Answer:
- when we move from left to right in a period the valency of an element firstly increases till the group number 14 and then it begins to decrease. for example : valency of carbon which is in group number 14 is 4 but the valency of fluorine which is in group number 17 is 1 also the valency of lithium which is in group number 1 is 1. This happens because the number of electrons in the valence shell continuously increases from left to right in a period.
- when we move from top to bottom in a period the valency of an element remains constant or same. for example : the valency of lithium which is in group 1 and period II is 1 and valency of the element potassium which is in group 1 and period IV is also 1. This happens because the valence electron remains constant when we move from top to bottom in a period.
hope it helps
thank you.
