Answer:

Hello my friend

Explanation:

Copper does not react with dilute sulphuric acid. So, no reaction takes place when dilute sulphuric acid is poured on a copper plate. But when concentrated sulphuric acid is poured over copper plate, effervescence is observed. This happens because of formation of hydrogen gas.

(a) Dilute sulphuric acid is poured on a copper plate?

Ans. Copper do not react with Dilute sulphuric acid as it is less reactive (according to reactivity series). But when Copper react with concentrated sulphuric acid formation of Copper (II) sulphate and Hydrogen gas takes place.

Cu + H2SO4 → CuSO4 + H2

(b) Iron nails are placed in copper sulphate solution?

Ans. As Iron is more reactive than Copper, so it displaces copper from it's solution and formation of Iron sulphate and Copper takes place.

(Copper sulphate is blue in colour and Iron sulphate is green in colour.)

CuSO4 + Fe → FeSO4 + Cu

The above reaction is an example of Displacement Reaction, as more reactive element displaces less reactive element from it's compound.

Series of metals in the decreasing reactivity is known as Reactivity Series.

→ K = Potassium

→ Na = Sodium

→ Ca = Calcium

→ Mg = Magnesium

→ Al = Aluminum

→ Zn = Zinc

→ Fe = Iron

→ Pb = Lead

→ H = Hydrogen

→ Cu = Copper

→ Hg = Mercury

→ Ag = Silver

→ Au = Gold
