What happens when:
(a) Dry apricots are left for sometime in pure water and later transferred to sugar solution?
(b) A Red Blood Cell is kept in concentrated saline solution?
(c) The Plasma-membrane of a cell breaks down?
(d) Rheo leaves are boiled in water first and then a drop of sugar syrup is put on it?
(e) Golgi apparatus is removed from the cell?
Answers
Answer:
Explanation:
a) When dry apricots are left for sometime in pure water, they will swell. Because, water will enter into them through the process of osmosis. Later, when these apricots will be transferred to sugar solution, they will again shrink. This also occurs due to osmosis.
b)When RBC is kept in saline solution, it will shrink. As the concentration of saline solution is higher than the concentration inside the cell. Thus, water will move outside the cytoplasm and the cell will shrink. When RBC is kept in concentrated solution, RBC will shrink.
c)If the plasma membrane ruptures or breakdown then the cell will not be able to exchange material from its surrounding by diffusion or osmosis. Thereafter the protoplasmic material will be disappeared and the cell will die.
d)When Rheo leaves are boiled in water first and then a drop of sugar syrup is put on it, osmosis does not occurs, due to the death of the cells of the leaf. This shows that selective permeability is property of living plasma membrane.
e) The golgi apparatus is responsible for the transport of proteins and lipids and fatty materials to another cell organelles. If it is removed some cell organelles will stop working.

Answer
a)Dry apricots first swell up due to endosmosis and later, when put in sugar solution, they shrink due to exosmosis.
(b) R.B.Cs will shrink due to exosmosis.
(c) The cell will die.
(d) On boiling, the cells of rheo leaves get killed. Therefore, no change will occur on putting drop of sugar syrup on rheo leaves.
(e) Vesicle formation in the cell will stop.
