When a living plant cell is put in a salt solution, water from the cell sap diffuses out through the cell membrane making the cell protoplasm to shrink a process known as plasmolysis while when a dead plant cell is kept in a salt solution it will gain water through the cell membrane and become turgid a process known as deplasmolysis.
