when a metal reacts with water it produces metal hydroxide and hydrogen

eg

mg + h20 = mgoh + h ( unbalanced )

when a metal react with water then as a result metallic oxide is formed and hydrogen gas is released

for example

4Na + 2H2O = 2Na2O + H2
