When acetylene and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) are passed over alumina at 400⁰C, hydrogenation reaction occurs and converts acetylene to ethane.
- In this process, H₂S gets converted to sulfur. It changes its oxidation state from -2 to 0, hence undergoing oxidation.
- As a result, acetylene undergoes reduction and forms ethane.
- Alumina acts as a catalyst to increase the rate of the reaction.
