Answer:

Chlorine gas (Cl2) reacts with excess ammonia to give ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and Nitrogen gas. The reaction is shown below:-

3 Cl2 + 8 NH3 = 6 NH4Cl + N2 (g)

But, if excess of chlorine is treated with ammonia, then, nitrogen-tri-chloride (NCl3) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) is formed.

NH3 + 3 Cl2 = NCl3 + 3 HCl

Here, nitrogen chloride (NCl3) is a powerful explosive.
