Answer:
When an acid reacts with a base, forms salt and water as products. This reaction is known as neutralization.
Base + Acid - - > Salt + water
For example, dilute Sodium Hydroxide(NaOH) solution is added with phenolphthalein indicator(turns pink in basic and colorless for acidic and neutral solutions) by which the solution turns to pink.
Now, add dilute Hydrochloric acid(HCl) drop by drop to dilute NaOH solution. The solution becomes colorless indicating that the effect of base is nullified by an acid. The reason for this change is the formation of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and water(H2O) .
NaOH + HCl - - > NaCl + H2O
Other examples are
H2SO4 + 2NaOH - - > Na2SO4 + 2H2O
HNO3 + NaOH - - > NaNO3 +H2O
