When an iron nail is exposed to moist air ,it reacts with the moisture and oxygen present in the atmosphere and a reddish brown substance is formed on its surface. This reddish brown substance is flaky and is called rust. When rust is formed, the metal reduces and furrows and holes are formed on its surface as though the metal has been eaten away.
The chemical formula of rust is Fe O .nH O.
