Boric acid is produced when sulphuric acid is reacted with borax.

  • On adding a calculated quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid to a hot concentrated solution of borax, boric acid is produced.
  • On heating borax with ethyl alcohol and concentrated sulphuric acid, vapours of triethyl borates are produced.
  • When ignited these vapours burn with a green edged flame.
  • The reaction is given below:

Na_{2}B_{4}O_{7}+H_{2}SO_{4}+5H_{2}O 4H_{3}BO_{3}+Na_{2}SO_{4}
