If we mix calcium carbide with water ethyne is released due to endothermic reaction between them. This is the industrial method of producing ethyne.

CaC2(s)+2H2O(l) = C2H2(g)+Ca(OH)2(g)

In this question use the chemical reaction that when CaC2reacts with water that is CaC_2(s)+2H_2O(l)\Rightarrow C_2H_2(g)+Ca(OH)_2(g). The products on the right-hand side are the results of the reactants.

As we know calcium carbide is a solid element and the chemical formula of calcium carbide =CaC_2

Now as we know water is a liquid whose chemical formula=H_2 O

Now the chemical reaction of these two compounds is shown below,

\Rightarrow CaC_2(s)+2H_2O(l)\rightarrow C_2H2_2(g)+Ca(OH)_2(g)

Here we use one unit of calcium carbide and two units of water so the resultant product is acetylene (C_2H_2) which is a gas.

So when calcium carbide reacts with water it produces acetylene.

So this is the required answer.

Hence option (C) is the correct answer.

Note -C_2H_2 thus formed over this reaction is also termed as ethyne formally known as acetylene. It is a hydrocarbon and the simplest alkyne. Acetylene is commonly used for welding and cutting. The welding that uses acetylene is also known as oxy-cutting or gas cutting. Acetylene is basically a colorless gas.
