Question:

What happens when carbon monoxide is treated with chlorine?

Answer and explation:

When carbon monoxide reacts with chlorine gas, it produces a gas named as phosgene. It is a highly poisionus gas.The chemical formula for this gas is CoCl₂ and the chemical name for this gas is carbonyl chloride.

Phosgene is industrially  produced by passing CO and chlorine gas through a bed of porous activated carbon as catalyst. Naturally phosgene it is produced in the presence of UV rays and radical reaction(a reaction occurs by free radical mechanism and it occurs with the substitution of one or more of the atoms or groups present in the substrate by different atoms or groups) takes place. Oxygen and chloroform converts to phosgene through radical reaction.

Chemical equation:

CO(g)+Cl₂(g)→COCl₂(g)
