when chlorine is passed over slaked lime(Ca(OH)2) it is rapidly absorbed to form bleaching powder or else a chloride of lime.
Chemical reaction:
   Ca(OH)2+Cl2----->CaOCl2+water

When chlorine is passed over slaked lime at 313K ,bleaching powder (CaOCl2) is formed


The reaction is as follows:-


Ca(OH)2 + Cl2-->CaOCl2 + H2O


Uses of bleaching powder-


1.It is used for disinfecting drinking water to make it germ free.

2.It is used for bleaching cotton and linen in textile industry.
