What happens when cinnabar is roasted??

Cinnabar is the sulfide ore of mercury. The chemical formula for this ore is HgS. This ore undergoes a process of roasting which happens in the presence of oxygen. When this ore is heated, mercury sulfide is converted into mercury oxide and it releases sulfur dioxide.
