The copper sulphate crystals CuSO4. 5H2O contain 5 water molecules which are known as water of crystallization. When we heat the crystals, these water molecules are removed and the salt turns white. If we moisten the crystals again with water, the blue colour of the crystals reappear.

When crystalline copper sulphate(CuSO4) is heated, it loses the water of crystallisation and thereby results in the formation of anhydrous copper sulphate.

The colour of the new substance formed is white.

  • Copper sulphate exists as CuSO4.5H2O , i.e. water molecule attached to it as water of crystallisation. It is normally blue in colour, however, on heating it, the water is lost and thereby white coloured anhydrous copper sulphate is formed.

CuSO4.5H2O --------> CuSO4 +5H20

  • On further heating the anhydrous copper sulphate, we may get copper(II) oxide, which is black in colour.
