When sodium carbonate is heated it decomposes to form sodium oxide and carbon dioxide .

Na2CO3 --> Na2O + CO2

Test : the gas released is colourless and odourless which turns lime water milky and has no effect on acidified potassium permanganate solution and acidified potassium dichromate solution.
