Nitric oxide (NO) is formed by the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitric oxide is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which in turn reacts with water to give nitric acid (HNO3). Nitrogen oxides therefore react with water to form nitric acid (HNO3). Nitrogen and Oxygen do not react at ambient temperatures.

Many attempts have been made to fix atmospheric nitrogen in the form of metallic nitrides, e.g. AlN, Mg3N2, Ca3N2, etc., by the direct combination of the elements at a high temperature. The production of ammonia is then effected by the decomposition of these compounds by water or steam:

AlN + 3H2O = Al(OH)3 + NH3.
