It reacts with Hcl to form a calcium chloride, water and carbon dioxide. Egg shell is made up of calcium carbonate, effervescence of bubbles occurs at the egg shell due to the production of carbon dioxide.

Caco3 +2Hcl -> Cacl2 +water (H2O) +carbon dioxide (Co2)

We know that egg shells are made of calcium carbonate, i.e., CaCO3. When egg shells are dropped into hydrochloric acid, it gives calcium chloride, carbon dioxide gas, and water.

The balanced chemical equation for the reaction is:

CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O
