When electric current is passed through a colloidal solution, the dispersed phase (or colloidalparticles) move towards oppositely charged electrodes. On reaching the electrode, they lose their charge and get coagulated.

The colloidal particles orient themselves along the electric field. If the particles are negatively charged then they move towards the positive pole. 
This same principle is used in Electrophoresis
