under certain condition ,alkane react with nitric acid form nitro alkane i.e replacement of hydrogen atom by NO2 group and this reaction is known s nitration.

Nitration of alkane is carried by two method

1.Vapor phase nitration 2.liquid phase nitration

1.Vapor phase nitration- Nitration of alkane may be carried out in vapor phase between 150 and 450 degree C a complex mixture niro alkane is formed. the mixture contain all possible mono nitro derivative of alkane and they are formed by chain fission(homolytic cleavage) of both C-C,C-H bond.

2.In liquid phase nitration ,the hydrocarbon is heated with concentrated nitric acid under 140 degree C.liquid phase nitration is slow and poly nitro product is formed

Vapor phase nitration is more satisfactory then liquid phase nitration
