ESTERIFICATION: When ethanol reacts with acetic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst, a fruity and sweet smelling liquid called Ester is formed.

CH3COOH + CH3CH2OH ------(cont. H2SO4) ----- CH3-COO-CH2CH3 (ESTER)

**Here H2SO4 acts as dehydrating agent that is it removes water formed otherwise ester formed will get converted into an acid**
