Reaction of ethanol and ethanoic acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid.

  • The reactants given are as follows:
  1. Ethanol - C_2H_5OH
  2. Ethanoic acid - CH_3COOH
  • The reactants are heated in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid (H_2SO_4) as catalyst.
  • As a result of reaction between the reactant double displacement and dehydrogenation reaction occurs.
  • This leads to formation of ethylethonate and water as the product end product of the reaction.
  • The balanced chemical equation involved in the reaction are as follows:

C_{2} H_{5} O H+C H_{3} C O O H \stackrel{C o n c . H_{2} S O_{4}}{\longrightarrow} C H_{3} C O O C_{2} H_{5}+H_2O
