When ethanol reats with alkaline solution of potassiom permanganate

Ethanol is oxidised to ethanoic acid.

3 C2H5OH + 4KMnO4 → 3 HC2H3O2 + 4 MnO2 + 4 KOH + H2O

KMnO4 oxidised the ethanol. If we had added a bit of dilute H2SO4 as well, the contents would have gone colourless.
