when food reaches the small intestine, in the form of chyme, the nutrients are absorbed from that chyme. when the chyme just enters the small intestine the nutrients in it are broken down into simpler substances by enzymes and as this chyme goes deeper the simpler substances are absorbed by the small intestine. hope this helps .
