The HCl breaks down the protective oxide layer that forms on aluminium
Al2O3 + 6HCl ===> 2AlCl3 + 3H2O
then the acid reacts with the exposed metal
2Al + 6HCl ===> 2AlCl3 + 3H2

Yes..the protective oxide layer that forms on aluminium when the hydrochloric acid breaks down..and..then the acid reacts with the metal .
