Reaction between hydrogen gas and copper oxide.

Explanation:

  • The concept involved is the difference in the reactivity of the elements involved in the reaction.
  • In the given case, the reactants involved are hydrogen gas and copper oxide.
  • When the reactivity of hydrogen and copper is compared, the former is more reactive than the latter.
  • Due to this reason, hydrogen displaces copper from copper oxide and forms two products namely water and copper.
  • Due to the formation of copper, a brown color ring appears on top of the reaction mixture.
  • The balanced chemical equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

2H + CuO\rightarrow Cu + H_2O
