Explanation:

1. on heating the reaction mixture,the sulphur melts and reacts with the iron exothermically to form iron sulfide. The mineral wool plug in the mouth of the test tube prevents sulphur vapour escaping and possibly catching fire

2. when iron and sulpher are merely mixed

they undergo reaction and form ferrous sulphide
