Chloroform gives COCl2 on exposure to air and sunlight. It undergoes oxidation releasing a toxic gas that is Phosgene gas (COCl2) and Hydrochloric acid which is used in the production of urethanes and polycarbonate plastics. In order to avoid this, it is kept in dark bottles to prevent any oxidation process.
