When lime water reacts with carbon dioxide, it gives a milky solution.

EXPLANATION:

The reaction of lime water and carbon dioxide is a two- step process.

Lime water is basically carbon hydroxide dissolved in water and when it reacts with water, it gives calcium carbonate which is water insoluble. The calcium carbonate precipitates giving a milky solution.

The equation for the reaction is:

\bold{\mathrm{Ca}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}+\mathrm{CO}_{2} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaCO}_{3}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}}

In the presence of carbon dioxide which is more in quantity, the calcium carbonate will further react with carbon dioxide to form calcium bicarbonate where, it is again water soluble and makes the milky appearance go away.

This process is known as fermentation.
