When Magnesium metal is burnt in air then we get Magnesium oxide and lot of heat energy.

Chemical equation:

Metal + oxygen ----> Metal oxide + heat energy

2Mg +O2 ----------> 2MgO + Q

Magnesium oxide(metal oxide) is basic in nature .

MgO +H2O ------> Mg(OH)2

Magnesium hydroxide turns red litmus paper to blue .
