Marble chips are made up of by calcium carbonate. When they are treated with HCl, carbon dioxide gas is formed along with water and calcium chloride. CaCO 3 +HCl→CaCl 2+H 2O+CO 2

Marble chips react with dilute hydrochloric acid to produce carbon dioxide gas. The rate of this reaction can be changed by changing the size of the marble chips.
