Answer:
The alkali metals react with nonmetals in Groups 15 and 16 (Va and VIa) of the periodic table. Sulfides can be formed by the direct reaction of the alkali metals with elemental sulfur, furnishing a variety of sulfides. Phosphorus combines with the alkali metals to form phosphides with the general formula M3P.

REACTIONS WITH ALKALI -
The base is a sour taste substance that forms alkali in an aqueous solution.
Base reacts with acids to form salts that may or may not be soluble in water.
1. With metals -
- In reaction with alkali, hydrogen gas is liberated.
- The presence of hydrogen can be detected by the popping sound when a burning candle is brought near the test tube's mouth.
- Metals formes metallic oxides that are basic in nature.
Metal + Alkali → Metal oxide + Hydrogen
2. WIth non-metals -
- Non-metals react with water to form salt and water.
- Alkali donates electrons and non-alkali readily accepts to form the salt.
- The exception to this reaction is shown by some gases and nitrogen.
Non-metal + Alkali → Salt + water
