metal oxides are generally basic in nature . so when they react with base no change wiil occur.
but some are basic and acidic in nature.so in acidic nature it behaves as base and in alkaline in nature it behaves as acid.
so when these react with bases salt and water is produced and these are called amphoteric oxides.
