When a metal reacts with an acid, it leads to the formation of hydrogen gas and a new compound. But sometimes the metal being more reactive than hydrogen, displaces it in its compound.

For example:-

Fe + HCl = FeCl + H2
Mg + HCl = MgCl + H2

Hope it helps
